Overview

The Supply Chain Director of Manufacturing is responsible for overseeing manufacturing and leading key initiatives to improve manufacturing efficiencies and plant operations in Owings Mills and the Arbutus Warehouse. The Director of Manufacturing will develop and maintain plant operations by efficiently and profitably meeting company standards and improving the company’s competitive position. This position will be primarily responsible for managing initiatives and teams involving packaging, blending, sanitation, and warehouse shipping/inventory. This includes managing the facility in all aspects of resource management (people, equipment/machinery and facilities), materials handling and processing, sanitation, production, and meeting the federal and state regulations in accordance with FDA, OSHA, USDA, FSMA  and SQF. The Director of Manufacturing will also be responsible for oversight of plant safety program and metrics as well as ensuring that we are providing safe products to our customers.

The Director of Manufacturing will be responsible for developing and implementing manufacturing process improvements using Lean Manufacturing, Six-Sigma, and other resources.

The Director of Manufacturing will manage multiple projects to meet cost savings objectives, specified deliverables, and deadlines. This position will serve as a member of continuous improvement teams to maximize equipment and labor efficiency, utilization, cost containment and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee plant operations and activities for blending, packaging, sanitation, and shipping and management of raw materials and packaging inventory.
  • Maintaining and/or improve SQF II quality rating.
  • Provides effective leadership, direction and coaching to direct and indirect reports including, but not limited to, delegating, staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations and terminations.
  • Identify and execute new packaging opportunities for growth opportunities.
  • Work with plant controller to identify and reduce product variances.
  • Utilize latest IT systems to improve efficiencies and reduce yield loss of production floor.
  • Leverage knowledge of manufacturing plant and equipment to implement new product launches.
  • Coordinate plant activities through planning with departmental managers and supervisors to insure the total manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Ensures collaboration of engineering and other functional areas, establishing effective working relationships with business partners.
  • Implement cost effective systems of control over capital, operating expenditures, manpower, wages and salaries.
  • Establish and monitor overall plant performance for production, quality and FDA/FSMA standards.
  • Optimizes utilization of labor overtime, premium freight, and repair expenses.
  • Develop yearly business plans and personal objectives that support the overall company goals.
  • Maintains existing plant facilities, production equipment, and systems and recommends replacement or improvement when necessary.
  • Innovative process design and forward thinking planning, specifically on production lines
  • Lead and assist in continuous improvement projects, including participation on cross functional teams.
  • Conducting time studies and evaluating current states of existing processes and equipment.
  • Identifying opportunities through root cause analysis to improve current processes, equipment, and generate cost savings.
  • Create proposals and execute solutions based on approved recommendations.
  • Research, implement, and conduct ROI’s on assigned capital budget projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; master’s degree in Supply Chain Management or related field preferred
  • 10 years of Plant Supervision and/or supply chain leadership experience working in a food manufacturing and distribution facility.
  • 7 years of experience leading people and providing general leadership for supply chain management, manufacturing, sanitation, warehousing support and other related functions.
  • Experience and knowledge of food packaging equipment.
  • Accomplished in all areas of food manufacturing including process/production control, materials management, safety, and human resources. Financial savvy with prior budgetary responsibilities and cost management successes.
  • Requires knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/Continuous Improvement principles and the ability to execute Root Cause Analysis.
  • Must be proficient in the utilization of Microsoft Office specifically Word, Power Point, Excel and Visio.
  • Experience managing and leading direct reports of 50+
  • This position requires 15% travel.
  • Ability to manage multiple locations.
  • Valid Driver’s License and applicable insurance coverage is required.
